More About Me

Thank you so much for taking the time to explore the work that I've done on my website. I wanted to add on a little bit to what I had in the first page regarding who I am and why it is I want to pursue this path in journalism.

Why Journalism?

I had a very fortunate life growing up, shielded from many of the difficulties faced by people around me. My parents immigrated to the Bay Area of California in 2000, and it's because of that move that I had access to the resources I did growing up. I often think about how different my life would have been if my parents had decided to stay in India. During the handful of times I visited my grandparents and cousins in India, I witnessed the stark reality that people lived in. I realized just how privileged I was and how little I had done to help others. What my life could have been is the reality for billions of people in many third-world countries. However, though it may be naive to believe, I think if more people knew what life really looked like outside our country, they might be inclined to do something about it. Whether it is lobbying politicians to send foreign aid packages or donating to an NGO, I believe all people inherently have a sense of empathy when they witness human suffering. The issue is that most people don't see it.

My goal as a journalist is to show people the reality of the conditions the world lives in, and I believe places of conflict exemplify the distressed standard of living that the majority of the world is forced to endure. I want to tell the stories of those living in harsh conditions to put a human face to the problem that could very easily be alleviated by my potential audience. I want to give a voice to the voiceless and provide them with the opportunity to speak directly to the American public. The reason I want to do this is that I am fortunate that my parents decided to come to this country, and I want to use the resources I've been given to contribute to a cause I believe in. I believe the best way to help is to provide a platform for people to share their lives with us.

As an international conflict broadcast journalist, I won't just write about the people whose stories I want to tell; I can record them telling their own stories in their own voices. I can show the actual homes they live in, the ways in which their lives have been impacted and how they are adapting to the conflict in their country. I can draw attention to and contextualize the conditions that people are living in using a medium that can capture a reality my audience may have never considered before. My audience will have all the information they need to act in a way they believe is best, and I have hope that when people are armed with information, the conditions of people around the world will improve. I do not believe it is my place to convince people to act a certain way, nor is it my place to force a particular narrative. All that I can and will do is represent the truth, and I believe the truth is compelling enough. To me, there is no nobler calling than providing people with information, which is why I am and will continue to be a journalist.
